Semifinal Match #1 preview
This matchup highlights a battle between Midwest United FC and Livonia City FC, pitting one of the more decorated teams from the UWS Midwest Conference against a brand new UWS League 2 club. These two clubs have already met once in 2020, with Midwest United besting Livonia City 4-0 on July 11th.
Midwest United (formerly Grand Rapids FC Women) is coming off a third consecutive UWS season reaching the UWS Midwest Conference Final. Their previous two seasons in the league netted a UWS championship in their 2017 inaugural season, following it up with a trip to the UWS semifinals in 2018.
United have had a stellar summer, winning all three of their tune-ups entering the Showcase. The 2017 UWS champions posted a similar 4-0 scoreline against Corktown AFC on July 8th, while snatching a 3-1 victory from Detroit City FC on July 17th.
Livonia City is looking to play spoiler coming in as the lone UWS League Two entry in the Showcase. The newbies have warmed up with friendlies against fellow UWS League 2 foe Rebels FC, as well as Wayne County Sporting’s MPSL Women’s team and the aforementioned duel with Midwest United.
Semifinal Match #2 preview
Yet another battle between an expansion side and an experienced Midwest Conference opponent. Detroit City FC comes in with an advantage playing as the host club, but Lansing United’s track record speaks for itself over the past two seasons – going 15-1-4 and grabbing regular season conference crowns.
Detroit City has only one tune-up under their belt this summer – a 3-1 loss to Midwest United FC on July 17th. Le Rouge grabbed a 1-0 lead early in the second half, but gave up three unanswered goals to drop their inaugural match. Forward Tori Singstock netted the first goal in DCFC women’s history.
Lansing, on the other hand, enters the Showcase to play their only two matches of the summer. United will be without star center back Zoe Morse, as she’s taken her talents to the Windy City for the Chicago Red Stars, who drafted her in the second round of the 2020 NWSL Draft. Despite the regular season success, hardware has eluded the Hoops, as they fell at home to Midwest United in the Midwest Regional Semifinal last season. They’ll certainly have a chip on their shoulder entering the Showcase, where a win could set them up for a potential rematch against Midwest United on Sunday.
