New Amsterdam FC has joined the National Independent Soccer Association as an expansion team.
The team has been rumored to play at Fordham University in the Bronx.
New Amsterdam FC will play in NISA after the COVID-19 pandemic, although the league did not specify whether that would be in the fall season. That campaign is slated to begin in August.
“Excited to announce we’re joining NISA,” the league said on Twitter.
NISA said that New Amsterdam FC “will bring a meaningful derby” to the metropolitan New York area since the Cosmos joined the league for the fall season.
The expansion team will participate in the NISA FIFA 20 Tournament, which begins Friday.
“To our knowledge, this marks the first time a professional club will play virtual soccer competition before hitting the field for league play,” a statement from NISA said.
