Darwin Espinal’s time with the Oakland Roots was short and sweet.

Espinal’s loan to the National Independent Soccer Association side was terminated by mutual contest by both parties on Wednesday.

The Cosmos midfielder has been loaned to Detroit City FC for the remainder of the NISA spring season and will report to New York after the campaign ends in June.

Espinal will see several familiar faces on Detroit City FC as three other Cosmos players are on that squad — defender Matt Lewis, midfielder Sal Barone and forward Isaac Acuna.

On Feb. 18, the midfielder signed with the Cosmos, who loaned him to Oakland.

He was vital part of the Cosmos midfield during the National Premier Soccer League and NPSL Members Cup seasons.

Espinal was hampered by injuries for part of the year, but when the 25-year-old midfielder competed, he was the center piece of the Cosmos’ attack, which kept the Cosmos in the running for the Members Cup crown. He scored two goals as he earned Members Cup Best XI honors along with Cosmos teammates Emmanuele Sembroni and Aly Hassan.
