Atlanta United announced Sunday that striker Josef Martinez suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during Saturday’s 2-1 win at Nashville SC.

Martinez, one of the top goal-scorers in MLS the past two seasons and the 2018 MVP and scoring champion, will undergo surgery on a date to be determined to begin the rehabilitation process.

It was not immediately known how long the Martinez will be sidelined, but he probably will be sidelined for the rest of the season.

The Venezuelan international suffered the injury midway through the second half and was replaced by Adam Jahn in the 69th minute.

Atlanta (1-0-0, 3 points) returns to action Saturday for its home opener at Mercedes-Benz Stadium against FC Cincinnati (7 p.m.).
