SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic – The United States took first place in Group C of the Concacaf Women’s U-20 Championship with an 11-0 victory over Honduras on Wednesday night.
The USA scored three times in the opening 20 minutes on goals from Trinity Rodman, Shae Holmes and Katelyn Duong.
The USA entered the game having already clinched advancement to the knockout stage after wins against Cuba (9-0) and host Dominican Republic (4-0) in its first two matches.
With the team playing its third game in five days, head coach Laura Harvey rotated her squad again, making seven changes to the starting lineup from last game, but the U.S. attack kept humming. After some effective bunkering defense by Honduras early on, the USA finally broke through in the 14th minute as Rodman ran under a looping service from Holmes on the left wing and connected with a volley just inside the six-yard box to make it 1-0.
The U.S. dominated the remainder of the first half. Holmes and Duong found the back of the net shortly after Rodman’s opening goal and two Honduras own goals by its goalkeeper pushed the USA’s lead to five with just under 30 minutes gone. Rodman added two more goals – completing her first career U-20 WNT hat trick – in the 34th and 37th minute as the U.S. finished the first half with a 7-0 advantage.
The second half saw more of the same from the U.S. offense as forward Summer Yates tallied goals in the 52nd and 70th while Rodman added her fourth and final goal in the 71st. Another Honduras own goal capped the scoring onslaught in the 73rd minute.
With her four goals, Rodman tied a U-20 WNT record for goals in a match, equaling teammate Mia Fishel’s four goal tally in the USA’s opening game of the tournament vs. Cuba. Previously, Kelly Wilson, Lindsay Tarpley and Heather O’Reilly put together four-goal performances as U-19s during World Cup qualifying, while Kia McNeil (2004) netted four at the 2004 Concacaf Women’s U-20 Championship. Civana Kuhlmann scored four for the U-20 WNT in a 2017 international friendly vs. Finland.
After sweeping through Group C play with a 3-0-0 record and a plus-24 goal difference, the USA will face St. Lucia in the Round of 16 on Saturday. In the day’s other Group C match, Cuba and Dominican Republic tied 0-0. Both teams advanced to the knockout round.
