MIAMI, Fla. – Massapequa, N.Y. native Dylan Nealis became the third overall pick of the MLS SuperDraft Thursday as Inter Miami CF selected the Georgetown University defender.
On the first choice, Inter Miami selected the 2019 MAC Hermann Trophy winning striker Robbie Robinson from Clemson University.
“Robbie and Dylan Nealis have both had exciting collegiate careers and will bring more offensive and defensive depth to our roster,” sporting director Paul McDonough said.
Nealis, who attended Massapequa High School and played for the Massapequa Soccer Club in the Long Island Junior Soccer League, is a skillful right back who captained Georgetown for two years. He appeared in 78 games for the team, starting 76 while registering seven goals and 14 assists.
He helped the Hoyas to the 2019 NCAA Division I title, defeating the University of Virginia in the final. Nealis was named a 2019 Hermann finalist and won the Big East defensive player of the year. He also was named to the All-Big East first team and the United Soccer Coaches All-America first team. In 2018, Nealis was named Big East defensive player of the year and All-Big East first team.
Nealis, who played for the B.W. Gottschee Under-23 team in the Long Island Soccer Football League’s Ryder-Vass tournament, was hosted at a restaurant in his hometown during the draft. A crowd of about 20 people gathered to congratulate him on the moment.
At Clemson, the 6-2 Robinson compiled 24 goals and 10 assists in his brief career. He was named a first team All-American and Atlantic Coast Conference offensive player of the year. He finished the 2019 season as joint top scorer in NCAA Division I with 18 goals and top 10 in the country with nine assists in 19 games.
Robinson received a surprise call from owner David Beckham welcoming him to the club while situated at Clemson University during the draft, surrounded by family, coaches and teammates.
