It is rare for two players to share a player of the year award. But then again it is rare that a local college team has two players that made an impact on the squad.
Both players are juniors.
Both are attacking players, effective attacking players.
Both were named to the NCAA Division I women’s All-American team.
And both had similar impacts on the Hofstra University women’s winning season.
That’s why FrontRowSoccer.com has named Lucy Porter and Sabrina Bryan as winners of the 2019 local college co-players of the year. Players who performed in the metro area were eligible for the honor.
The Pride would never have finished anywhere near its 16-4-2 record, its third Colonial Athletic Association title (7-0-2 regular season mark) and an NCAA tournament berth (the Pride reached the second round) without these two players.
Porter, chosen on the second team, was named the CAA midfielder of the year. She led high-powered offense that ranked first in the conference in every offensive category. She finished with a program-record 40 points behind a conference-high 16 goals and eight assists. Porter also tied for a team- and CAA-high five game-winning goals.
She also was named to the United Soccer Coaches All-East Region first team, was the CAA midfielder of the year, was a member of the All-Colonial Athletic Association first team, was selected as the CAA Championship Most Outstanding Player, and to the All-ECAC team and earned a spot on the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List at the beginning of the season.
Bryan, the CAA attacking player of the year, was named to the third All-American team. She registered 32 points, which was second in the CAA from 11 goals and a CAA-high 10 assists. She added three game-winning goals, including the extratime game-winner that propelled Hofstra to the second round of the NCAA tournament.
She also was selected to the All-ECAC nod comes after her United Soccer Coaches All-East Region first team, CAA attacking player of the year, All-CAA first team and All-CAA Tournament Team honors.
And if that wasn’t enough, the duo also distinguished themselves in the classroom.
Porter was named an NCAA Division I Scholar first-team All-American, Bryan to the second team.
Porter accumulated a 3.49 grade-point average as a Health Science major. She was named to the CAA Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll in each of her last three semesters while also earning Dean’s List distinction three times.
Bryan had put together a 3.40 GPA as an Exercise Science major. She has been featured on the CAA Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll in each of her last three semesters and was named to the Dean’s List twice.
