On the last day of 2019, the Rochester Lancers are looking to the future to honor their past.

The Lancers announced Tuesday that their outdoor team will wear retro blue and gold uniforms during the National Premier Soccer League season to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the team winning the 1970 North American Soccer League championship.

It was the only title in the club’s history.

“I’m excited to honor the pioneers of indoor and outdoor of American soccer,” Lancers owners Salvatore “SoccerSam” Fantauzzo said. “The 1970 championship players, owners and staff laid down a strong soccer foundation here in Rochester.”

In case you were wondering, the No. 5 pictured was worn by Peter Short.

The indoor Lancers will return to Major Arena Soccer League action this weekend at the Dome Arena in Henrietta, N.Y. They will host the Florida Tropics on Friday and then the Harrisburg Heat on Saturday. Both games kick off at 7 p.m.
