CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – No. 16 seeded St. John’s men saw its NCAA Division I Tournament run come to an end in the third round as the Red Storm fell to No. 1 Virginia, 3-0, at Klockner Stadium Saturday night.
UVA (19-1-1) opened the scoring in the third minute as a corner kick was headed from the near post to the far post,to Andreas Ueland as he scored the first of his two goals.
The Red Storm (14-5-1) recorded its first scoring chance in the 12th minute as Skage Simonsen split two defenders on the right side before sending a cross into the box for Jared Juleau. The freshman headed the ball just over the crossbar.
UVA again off a corner kick in the 15th minute, as Ueland charged toward the cage and knocked it past goalkeeper Jan Hoffelner for a 2-0 lead.
The Cavaliers scored for the final time in the half with nine minutes remaining as Joe Bell converted on a penalty kick for a three-goal lead.
St. John’s keeper Luka Gavran made two saves in the second half.
