BRONX — The University of Rhode Island outlasted the Fordham University men in a nine-round shootout, earning a spot in the Atlantic 10 final for the second year in a row, at Jack Coffey Field Friday afternoon.
URI won the tie-breaker, 7-6, as Simon Trcka tallied the game-winner after Fordham’s Jack Murphy had his attempt saved.
The teams played 110 minutes of scoreless soccer before moving to the shootout.
Ludvik Benco came close to breaking the deadlock in the 43rd minute when he fired a shot on goal that Fordham goalkeeper Konstantin Weis managed to tip just over the crossbar.
Still scoreless early in the second half, Fordham nearly got on the board in the 51st minute when Tomer Zloczower drilled a shot off the crossbar.
Benco had a look at an open net with just over 10 minutes remaining in regulation, as Weis was unable to corral the rebound on a shot by Edvin Akselsen, but Benco’s attempt sailed over the crossbar.
Rhode Island will return to Jack Coffey Field Sunday at hoon for the Atlantic 10 championship game. The Rams will face the winner of the other semifinal match between VCU and Dayton.
