HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – After not having a player score a hat tick in 14 years, Hofstra University junior Matthew Vowinkel has two in his last three games.
On Saturday night, he scored all three goals for the Pride in a 3-0 victory over Northeastern University at Hofstra Soccer Stadium.
The win clinched the third seed in next week’s Colonial Athletic Association Championship.
Hofstra moved to 8-6-2 and 5-2-1 in the CAA. Northeastern, the No. 4 seed, fell to 6-8-3 overall and 3-3-2 in the league.
Vowinkel opened the scoring at 25:42 with a header off a feed from Storm Strongin. Vowinkel headed in another long cross, this one from Jason Ramirez, at 78:36, to increase the Pride’s lead to 2-0. He closed out the scoring by tapping in a rebound off a shot from Shane Salmon at 82:36.
The Pride defense limited the Huskies to eight shots with three on et. Goalkeeper Alex Ashton stopped all three shots for his 19th career shutout, which ties him for third place on the all-time Hofstra list with Patric Pray.
Northeastern keeper Cree Chandler made five saves.
Hofstra closes out the regular season at Columbia Univeristy Tuesday at 7 p.m.
