New York City FC goalkeeper Sean Johnson and Red Bulls center back Aaron Long were among 20 Major League Soccer players named Thursday to a U.S. national team pre-camp roster prior to a pair of must-win CONCACAF Nations League matches against Canada and Cuba next month.
U.S. national team head coach Gregg Berhalter decided to gather the most of the domestic players for a weeklong training camp at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. beginning Saturday. No players were called in from MLS Cup finalists Seattle Sounders FC and Toronto FC. They will play for the MLS title Nov. 11.
Those MLS players will then be joined by the national team’s European-based and MLS Cup players next weekend in Orlando.
The Americans hosts Canada in Orlando Nov. 15.
“We have the opportunity to take advantage of the MLS postseason window to start preparations for the matches against Canada and Cuba,” Berhalter said in a statement. “It’s another week to keep progressing as a group as we focus on getting the results we need to advance to the knockout phase of the Nations League.”
