WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Qunnipiac University scored in the 82nd minute to defeat 10-man Monmouth University in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match Wednesday night.

Quinnipiac (6-4-3, 4-1-1) hit the post and Henry Wiegand put home the rebound. Monmouth dropped to 1-11-2, 1-5-1.

“I thought we had some really good moments against Quinnipiac, who is one of the the top teams in the league,” Monmouth head coach Robert McCourt said. “We felt we should have gotten something out of the game, whether it was one point or three. The guys worked really hard in an adverse situation. They kept their cool and kept battling, so I’m proud of them.”

The Bobcats got on the board first on Tomas Svecula’s goal in the 25th minute.

Monmouth midfielder Robin Oswald was sent off after his second yellow card with a span of 4:01 at 30:39.

Quinnipiac made it 2-0 on Oriac Vila Rotxes’ goal in the 34th minute.

Seconds after both being subbed in, junior Anes Mrkulic played a ball to sophomore Liam McGregor, who dribbled the ball down the left side and blasted a goal to the upper right corner to cut the lead to 2-1. The goal was McGregor’s second in as many games.

In the 73rd minute, freshman Ben Zakowski bended a right foot free kick inside the left post to eaulize. It was Zakowski’s fourth goal in his last five games.

Monmouth will travel to Marist College next Wednesday.
