NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Monmouth University women’s soccer team extended its winning streak to eight games with a 5-0 road win at Iona College at Mazzella Field Wednesday afternoon.
The win gave Monmouth (9-2-2, 7-0-0) 21 points and guaranteed the Hawks a spot in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament.
Madie Gibson gave Monmouth the lead in the 17th minute and Monmouth never looked back. She has five goals this season and 32 for her career.
The Hawks scored four goals in the second half put the game out of reach with two strikes in the first eight minutes after intermission against the Gaels (4-10-2, 1-4-1).
Jess Johnson scored on a long free kick 30 seconds into the period, Dana Scheriff added a third seven minutes later and Monmouth got insurance goals from Alexis Marino and A’Liah Moore.
“There were tough conditions to play in today,” head coach Krissy Turner said.” Our ability to stay focused and prepared on the road is clearly a strength of this group. It is exciting to see a variety of players score goals for us and another shutout is a credit to our defenders and goalkeeper Amanda Knaub.”
Knaub made two saves to collect her nine shutout and 39th career clean sheet.
Monmouth plays its final road game of the regular season when it travels to Niagara University Saturday at 11 a.m.
