North Carolina forward Jessica McDonald has been voted National Women’s Soccer League player of the week by the NWSL Media Association, it was announced Wednesday.
McDonald scored twice, including the game-winning goal in a 3-2 win over Sky Blue FC.
It took 16 minutes for McDonald to find the back of the net for her team. McDonald received a through ball from McCall Zerboni as she dribbled past Sky Blue defender Estelle Johnson. Johnson blocked the first shot she took but fell short to stop the second attemp that gave the Courage the lead.
In the 81st minute, the Courage’s Lynn Williams crossed the ball to the top of the box, where teammate Debinha one-touched it to McDonald, who scored from inside the penalty area.
McDonald’s goal brought the Courage’s season goal total to 54, breaking the league record the the team set last season.
The Courage host aReign FC in a semifinal playoff match Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
