The eighth annual Marianne Volpe 5K and Pumpkin Fun Run will be held at Baldwin Harbor Park in Baldwin, N.Y. Saturday morning, Oct. 26.
The run is named after the wife of Jim Volpe, who had a long and distinguished career in the Long Island Junior Soccer League who passed away in 2011 at the age of 56 from Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL), an aggressive form of blood cancer.
The Baldwin, N.Y. resident left behind her husband, daughters Chelsea and Shaun, three brothers and five sisters.
Jim Volpe is a LIJSL Hall of Famer and chairperson of the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association ODP program. Chelsea and Shaun played in the LIJSL before performing for Manhattan College. They still are involved in the game today as adults.
The family started the Marianne Volpe 5K and Pumpkin Fun Run the day before Hurricane Sandy hit the New York metro area in 2012 and the soccer and running communities have been helping out since.
Seven years later, $200,000 has been raised for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society through the run. This year, in addition to proceeds going to LLS, Northwell Health’s LIJ Monter Cancer Center also will be a beneficiary.
