PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The St. John’s University women dropped its Big East opener, falling to Providence College, 4-0, at Chapey Field Saturday night.

Despite the game’s final result, the Johnnies (3-7-0, 0-1-0) put more shots on net than their counterpart. Six of the Red Storm’s eight tries were on target, but Providence keeper Shelby Hogan stopped all six. The Friars (6-3-1, 1-0-0) outshot St. John’s, 14-8.

In the 17th minute, Hannah McNulty headed an Olivia Lucia cross beyond the reach of goalkeeper Naya Lipkens, giving the Friars a 1-0 lead.

A 44th-minute tally from Chloe Ortolano gave Providence a 2-0 cushion at the intermission.

Providence bumped its lead to three only 18 seconds into the second goal on goal from Amber Birchwell before making it 4-0 in the 52nd on Elayna Grillakis score.

St. John’s hosts Seton Hall University Thursday at 7 p.m.
