NEW YORK – Columbia University scored in the first minute and the last minute of the first half to defeat the Monmouth University men, 2-0, Friday night.
The Lions (2-3-2) jumped out to an early lead with a low pass to a dangerous spot inside the box. Just before halftime, Columbia tacked on another after a scramble near the goal line off of a corner kick.
Monmouth fell to 0-6-1.
“We got punished on our own mistakes tonight,” Monmouth head coach Robert McCourt said. “We fought back hard and made a good case for getting something out of the match, but came up short. We look forward to the next phase of the season.”
The Hawks will travel to Manhattan College for their Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opener Wednesday night.
