Alexandru Mitrita: “More important is the victory tonight.” (Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports)

BRONX — New York City FC midfielder Alexandru Mitrita downplayed his incredible hat-trick he recorded in the opening half of the 4-1 romp over Atlanta United at Yankee Stadium Wednesday night.

“More important is the victory tonight,” he said. “We played amazing and we have an amazing team. I’m very happy for my first hat trick.”

Mitrita found the net within a 20-minute span in the 14th, 23rd and 34th minutes. It was the fifth fastest hat-trick from kickoff in MLS history. He also became the only player since David Villa to register an NYCFC hat-trick.

Not surprisingly, the Romanian downplayed that accomplished as well.

“David Villa is a top player, I can’t compare with him,” he said. “I want to do my best to do my job”

He certainly did his job, reaching 12 goals with two games remaining in the season.

NYCFC is still a point away from clinching the MLS Eastern Conference crown. The team has two games remaining in the season, both on the road, at the New England Revolution Sunday and at the Philadelphia Union Oct. 4, the final day of the regular season.

“It’s important to get points,” Mitrita said. “I was able to score three goals in front of our fans, it’s incredible.”
