WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J – A penalty kick in the 68th minute sent the Princeton University men past Monmouth University Wednesday night, 2-1.
The Hawks (0-5-0) got on the board in the eighth minute, as junior Sebastian Rodriguez netted his second goal of the season on an assist from freshman Julian Gomez.
The Tigers (2-2-0) tied it in the 21st minute on a corner kick. The ball was flicked on from a header and Walker Gillespie found the back of the net.
The teams played on even game for the next 40-plus minutes. In the 68th minute, the Tigers were awarded a penalty kick after a foul in the box. Kevin O’Toole tucked the ball inside the right post for the 2-1 lead.
“Unfortunately, we didn’t get the result we wanted tonight, but the team continues to work very hard,” Monmouth head coach Robert McCourt said. “It was another exciting night of soccer on The Great Lawn. We’re going to continue to build in an effort to get ready for conference play with a lot of new players.”
The Hawks will travel to Binghamton this Saturday.
