HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Junior Lucy Shepherd broke a scoreless tie during the 74th minute with her second goal of the season to lift the Hofstra University women past Columbia University at the Hofstra Soccer Stadium Sunday.

Hofstra (5-3-0), which won its third successive game, held a 12-4 advantage in shot attempts, and a 5-1 edge in shots on goal for the match. Lions goalkeeper Liz Matei made four saves before Shepherd ripped an off-balance shot through her legs. Sophomore Miri Taylor set up the play when her shot was blocked by a defender and junior Lucy Porter controlled the loose ball and found Shepherd at the penalty spot for the strike.

Columbia (3-2-1) appeared to have leveled the scoring during the 87th minute off a corner kick, but was called offside.

Freshman goalkeeper Skylar Kuzmich made one save to earn her second clean sheet of the season.

Hofstra will look to extend its winning streak when it closes out non-conference play against the University of Pennsylvania Friday at 6 p.m.
