The pockets of Portland Timbers head Giovanni Savarese are a bit lighter today.

Savarese, the former Cosmos coach, was fined an undisclosed amount by MLS commissioner Don Garber for his halftime criticism of referee Alex Chilowicz during Portland’s 2-1 win over Sporting Kansas City Saturday.

Savarese was interviewed by Timbers sideline reporter Nat Borchers at the break.

“The referees are screwing us all the time because this too could’ve been a PK,” Savarese said at halftime. “We don’t understand the rules anymore when in some other places these are called PKs. This should be called a PK as well for us. So, I don’t understand. They need to figure it out because the referees don’t understand anything that they are doing. From PRO, they need to communicate this. This should have been at least one PK.”

Those comments were in violation of the league’s public criticism policy, an MLS press release stated.
