WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – A 51st-minute goal by Ethan Shim that dinged off the inside of the left post gave No. 23 West Virginia University a 1-0 season-opening win over the Monmouth University men Friday afternoon.

The Hawks created several chances, including shots on goal from freshman Julian Gomez, junior Chris Scheuerman and sophomore Robin Oswald, but could not find the back of the net.

Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Sean Murray made seven saves.

“I thought the guys played well against a very talented and well-coached West Virginia team,” Monmouth head coach Robert McCourt said. “The foundation is being built, and it’s an exciting group of young men to be around for our coaching staff.”

Monmouth will host Penn next Friday at 7 p.m.
