HOUSTON — Carli Lloyd scored twice to pace Sky Blue FC to a 2-1 victory over the Houston Dash in a National Women’s Soccer League game at BBVA Stadium Saturday night.
Lloyd’s goals, in the 26th and 41st minute, gave Sky Blue (4-11-4, 16 points) a 2-0 advantage before a crowd of 4,102.
The U.S. international put Sky Blue up 1-0 in the 26th minute after making a run into the box unmarked. The scoring sequence began with captain Sarah Killion passing the ball down the right side of the field to Jen Hoy. Hoy ran past defender Allysha Chapman and sent her low cross through the box to Lloyd, who one-timed the ball to the back of the net.
Five minutes later, the former Dash player nearly scored again. The Dash defense gave her too much space as she cut into the box from the left side and rip a shot that deflected off defender Amber Brooks happened to be in the right place at the right time. In the 39th minute, Lloyd went at goal after beating midfielder Sophie Schmidt and fired another shot that was deflected out of play by defender Ally Prisock.
Persistence was key for Lloyd as she netted her second goal in the 41st minute after receiving a well-timed pass by Raquel Rodriguez. Goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan sent the ball up to Rodriguez in the midfield. The Costa Rican international sent the ball to unmarked Lloyd on the left flank. She dribbled at the backline and as Priscok approached she sent her shot low into the goal.
The Dash pulled one back four minutes into stoppage time. Amber Brooks sent a long ball to the head of Ariana Calderon on the left side. Calderon flicked it to Kealia Ohai. Ohai drilled a shot past the diving Sheridan.
Sky Blue FC returns home on Saturday, Sept. 7 at 1 p.m. to face Crystal Dunn and the North Carolina Courage at Yurcak Field.
