SANDY, Utah — Life went from bad to worse for Sky Blue FC Wednesday night.
U.S. international Christen Press tallied twice and former U.S. national team player Amy Rodriguez added a goal to power Utah Royals FC to a 3-0 triumph over Sky Blue FC at Rio Tinto Stadium.
Reeling and last-place Sky Blue FC (9 points) dropped to 2-11-3. Utah, which climbed into sixth place in the National Women’s Soccer League, improved to 6-6-3 and 15 points.
Press struck within a two-minute span in the opening half to turn the game into the hosts favor.
Running full speed in the middle of the field toward the backline, midfielder Lo’eau LoBonta found Press after the pass took a slight deflection off of Erica Skroski. Goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan came off her line to try and block the shot, but Press scored the first goal in the 27th minute.
Two minutes later, LoBonta, near right side near the endline, sent a cross into the box and connected with an onrushing Press. With one touch, Press fired the shot into the left corner of the net for a two-goal lead in the 29th minute.
Rodriguez continued the rout in the 48th minute. Forward Mallory Weber, who was on the left side, hit Rodriguez with a pass. She drilled a one-touch shot past Sheridan.
Sky Blue FC returns home to host Sam Kerr, Julie Ertz and the Chicago Red Stars at Yurcak Field Aug. 14 for the club’s Back to School Night. On Aug. 18 Sky Blue FC will take on Megan Rapinoe and Reign FC at Red Bull Arena at 1 p.m.
