ST. PAUL, Minn. — Tyler Boyd scored two goals and Paul Arriola and Gyasi Zardes added one goal apiece to power the United States to a 4-0 victory over Guyana in its Concacaf Gold Cup opener before a sellout crowd of 19,418 at Allianz Field Tuesday night.
Boyd scored his first two goals with the side as his first was the 1,000th goal in USMNT history.
The Americans (1-0-0, 3 points) sit atop Group D with a superior goal difference to Panama (1-0-0, 3), which defeated Trinidad & Tobago 2-0, in the day’s earlier game.
Group D action will shift to FirstEnergy Stadium in Cleveland, where Panama will play Guyana and the U.S. will meet Trinidad & Tobago June 22. Kickoff for the U.S. vs. Trinidad is set for 8 p.m. ET (FS1 and Univision).
Goalkeeper Zack Steffen registered the shutout.
After a hot start, the USMNT’s pace had just seemed to slow a bit when it carved out two big chances around the 25th minute. First, Arriola executed a nice turn in the center of the box to get off a shot that was blocked by a defender before Christian Pulisic was robbed from the middle of the box by a save from goalkeeper Akel Clarke.
The U.S.’s pressure was rewarded in the 28th minute as Arriola sprung open into the left side of the penalty area and the D.C. United attacker smashed a sharp angle shot into the right side netting for a 1-0 lead that the U.S. carried into halftime
Five minutes into the second half the USMNT scored its 1,000th goal. A raking crossfield ball from Michael Bradley was controlled by Boyd, who put a move on his defender and snapped a shot across the box into the lower left corner for his first U.S. goal and a 2-0 lead.
In the 55th minute, the Americans raised their lead to 3-0 thanks to an Arriola shot that deflected off a defender as Zardes slotted it into the net.
U.S. head coach Gregg Berhalter went to his bench just after the hour mark, bringing in Wil Trapp for Bradley and Cristian Roldan for Pulisic. Weston McKennie, who was injured, was replaced by Djordje Mihailovic.
Boyd capped off the evening with an 81st-minute goal.
