LA GRANGE, N.Y. — The Boys Under-12 State Open Cup final in the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association at Stringham Park June 1 was a nail-biting affair that went to 10 rounds of the shootout to determine a champion.

After New York Stars Premier Galaxy and Kings Park Xtreme tied 1-1 after regulation and overtime, a tie-breaker was needed. New York Stars won that, 9-8, and the New York City-based team will represent Eastern New York at the Regional I tournament from June 28-July 4 in Charleston, W.Va. as part of the National Championship Series.

“There was a very marginal difference between two excellent teams who play a similar style. Kings Park is really, really good,” Stars coach Errol McFarlane said. “In the end with the shootout, it came down to us holding our concentration.”

Sebastian Valdez scored New York Stars’ only goal of the game during regulation, also on a penalty kick.

New York Stars also received the Rocco Amoroso Sportsmanship Award, as determined by the game officials. Amoroso, a U.S. Soccer Life Member who died three years ago, started the Long Island Junior Soccer League’s Sportsmanship Program in 1980 and it spread to Eastern New York, nationally and then to China and Ireland.
