Carli Lloyd, Crystal Dunn and Allie Long were among the 23 players named to the U.S. women’s roster for next month’s Women’s World Cup by head coach Jill Ellis on Thursday.
Long and Dunn played for the Albertson Soccer Club in the Long Island Junior Soccer League.
Dunn, who performs for the North Carolina Courage in the National Women’s Soccer League, recently was named the National Women’s Soccer League player of the month of April after scoring four times in three matches for the Courage. She was left off the 2015 U.S. side that captured the world championship but went on to capture NWSL scoring and MVP honors that year. While Dunn is a midfielder with her club team, she is expected to be a left back for the USWNT, although she can play any position as the most versatile player on the national side.
Long, who plays for Reign SC, was considered on the bubble to make the squad, but is considered a solid player who can play multiple positions, especially at midfield.
Lloyd, who connected for a first-half hat-trick in the U.S.’s 5-2 triumph to secure the 2015 WWC title, plays for Sky Blue FC.
Midfielder Morgan Brian and right back Ali Krieger were two of the bigger surprise choices when Ellis revealed the roster on Thursday afternoon, three weeks ahead of the official deadline.
“Selecting a World Cup team is a long process, and I want to thank the players – the ones that made the final team and the ones that didn’t – for all of their hard work over the past two and a half years,” Ellis said. “They all pushed each other in every training session and every game and challenged the coaches to make some tough decisions. These 23 players have been through adversity and success, and it’s a group that has the talent, confidence, experience and desire to help us win the World Cup.”
