ORLANDO — Gyasi Zardes scored off a deflected shot in the 81st minute to lift the U.S. national team to a 1-0 victory over Ecuador in an international friendly at Orlando City Stadium Thursday night.

In the squad’s first full game in a year and half and for the first time under new head coach Gregg Berhalter, Zardes fired a shot that deflected off a Ecuador defender and over goalkeeper Alexander Domínguez for his seventh international goal.

“I thought the team played extremely well, with the short time we had to prepare for this match,” Zardes said.

“This gives us a lot of confidence going forward,” midfielder Christian Pulisic said.

New York City FC goalkeeper Sean Johnson recorded the shutout.

The Americans next play Chile Tuesday.
