HENRIETTA, N.Y. — The Rochester Lancers could not have asked for a better start to their Major Arena Soccer League 2 season Friday night.
Jake Schindler and Boomer Steigelman tallied two goals apiece to lift the Lancers to a 7-3 season-opening win over the Detroit Waza Flo before a capacity crowd of 2,500 at the Dome Arena.
In their first indoor match since 2015, the Lancers came out of the gate fast, grabbing a 3-0 advantage.
Steigelman struck twice in the first period. Enrique, one of several returnees, added another goal in the opening minutes of the second quarter. Schindler, an Irondequoit High School graduate (Rochester), tacked on two more before halftime to make it 5-1 as the hosts quickness and pressure made life difficult for Detroit.
So, the Waza Flo (1-3) had trouble keeping pace with Rochester’s quickness, but the Lancers couldn’t break through again until the fourth quarter.
Rochester goalkeeper Marcelo Moreira was credited seven saves, coming up big in the final period.
The Brazilian made a diving tip save to redirect a header by Brandon Bianchi with nine minutes left. Another Lancers veteran, Buffalo native Gary Boughton, locked up the win with a goal with 4:35 remaining for a 6-2 lead.
Michael Cunningham added the Lancers’ final goal.
Rochester hosts the Cincinnati Swerve at the Dome Arena Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
