CHICAGO – Depending on your vantage point, New York City FC midfielder Jonathan Lewis has received a late Christmas present or an early New Year’s surprise.

On Friday, U.S. men’s national team head coach Gregg Berhalter announced he added Lewis to the January camp roster, brining the squad to 28 players.

The 21-year-old Lewis is one of eight players on the roster to earn their first call-up and one of 13 who are uncapped. Lewis has played for the Under-20 team and was part of the U.S. squad that won the 2017 Concacaf U-20 Championship.

During his two-year tenure with NYCFC, Lewis has seen limited playing time, logging only 561 minutes over 25 games and four starts. He has three goals and four assists essentially as a substitute.

In 2018, Lewis scored one goal and assisted on three others in 14 games as a sub before he was loaned out to Louisville City FC of the United Soccer League.

Players will report to the Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif., Jan. 6. The U.S. opens the 2019 campaign against Panama on Jan. 27 at State Farm Stadium in Glendale Ariz. (8 p.m. ET; ESPN2, Univision Networks). The MNT continues preparation for the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup one week later when they welcome regional rival Costa Rica to Avaya Stadium in San Jose, Calif. on Feb. 2 (3:30 p.m. ET; FOX, Univision Networks).
