WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – The Monmouth University men could not hold a late lead and paid for it with a 2-1 extratime loss to Marist College in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action Wednesday night.
Samad Bounthong equalized in the 84th minute before Allen Gavilanes struck for the game-winner in the 101st minute for the Red Foxes against Monmouth (2-9-1, 0-5-0).
Monmouth sophomore Anes Mrkulic scored his first goal of the season on a header, deflecting senior Henrique Joaquim’s volley inside the left post.
Hawks freshman goalkeeper Sean Murray made a career-high 11 saves.
“Obviously we’re disappointed with the result, but I thought the guys put in a hard effort and played as a team,” Monmouth head coach Robert McCourt said. “There were some really good moments for us tonight, but in the end, we didn’t get the result so we have to go back to work tomorrow.”
Monmouth hosts Canisius College Saturday night.
