QUEENS, N.Y. — Zsani Kajan scored twice and goalkeeper Meredith Reinhardt made a vital save in the 78th minute to lift the the St. John’s University women to a 2-1 Big East victory over Butler University at Belson Stadium on Sunday afternoon at Belson Stadium.
The Red Storm handed the Bulldogs their first conference loss of the season.
Kajan registered both goals for tthe game winner in the 58th minute. She registered her second multi-scoring game of the season giving the redshirt sophomore nine goals.
Reinhardt had another stellar effort for St. John’s (5-5-1 2-2-1), making three saves, including saving a penalty kick in the 78th minute. As Paige Monaghan went in for the shot, Reinhardt extended her arms, making a diving catch to deny the equalizer.
The Red Storm broke through in the 17th minute as Kajan converted on a penalty kick to give the Johnnies a 1-0 lead. It was the first goal scored agaisnt the Bulldogs in conference play.
Less than four minutes later, Butler’s Anja Savich recorded the equalizer for a 1-1 halftime tie.
The game winner was scored in the 57th minute when Kajan, on a breakaway, weaved around Big East defender of the week Annika Schmidt. The Budapest, Hungary native cut back before blistering a left-footed shot to the corner of the net for a 2-1 edge.
St. John’s travels to South Orange, N.J. to face Seton Hall University Saturday at 6 p.m.
