BRONX, N.Y. – The Lehman College women played to a scoreless draw against Rutgers-Newark in the season opener for both teams at South Field Friday.
Despite being outshot by Scarlet Raiders, 19-7, it was the Lightning backline that held its own against a New Jersey Athletic Conference opponent. The Lehman defense was commanded by sophomore goalkeeper Rebecca Gritz, who had a stellar performance while making a career-best 11 saves.
Of Lehman’s seven total shots, five were on goal. Two of the Lightning’s shots on target where from freshman defender Micaela Canapa which forced goalkeeper Jasmin Erichsen to make a pair key saves.
Rutgers-Newark continued to attack in search of the game-winner for remainder of the match, but Lehman held on for the draw.
The Lightning, under fifth-year head coach Casey Melilli, will play its first away game of season when it travels to face Skyline Conference opponent Martime College at Reinhart Field Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
