QUEENS, N.Y. – Fresh off a 3-0 home victory over Sacred Heart University Monday night, the St. John’s University women will travel to Philadelphia on Thursday for a 7 p.m. showdown with Drexel at Vidas Field.
The match will mark the first game between the two programs and will be streamed live on Drexel Dragons TV.
The Johnnies enter the game at 2-2-0 after downing the Pioneers Monday night for the team’s first clean sheet of the season. The Red Storm’s record at Belson Stadium improved to 34-6-7 since the start of the 2013 season.
St. John’s controlled the game from start to finish Monday night, jumping out to a 1-0 lead following Christina Bellero’s first goal of the season in the 20th minute. On the other side of the intermission, Zsani Kajan added her second of the season and freshman Kayla Mesaros found the back of the net for the first time for the Red Storm. Kajan added in an assist, as did Big East Weekly Honor Roll selection Lucy Whipp and sophomore Maia Cabrera.
The Johnnies outshot Sacred Heart, 27-7, their the highest-game shot total since the first season of the realigned Big East; the Johnnies fired off 30 shots in a scoreless draw with Creighton Sept. 29, 2013.
Drexel enters the match at 1-1-2, having topped La Salle in extratime, 1-0, Monday night. Three of the team’s four goals this season have come from senior Shaelyn McCarty, including the game-winner against the Explorers. Kiera Hennessy recorded the team’s lone other goal of the season in a 2-1 loss against Rutgers University Aug. 19. McCarty and Hennessy were named to the preseason All-Colonial Athletic Association team after helping the Dragons to a fourth place finish in 2017.
