WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Lafayette converted a 55th-minute penalty kick and held on for a 1-0 victory over the Monmouth University men Tuesday night.
After a ball was sent into the box, the Hawks committed a foul near the six-yard box. Lafayette’s Chris Gomez then placed the penalty kick into the right corner for the game-winner.
The programs met for the first time since 1984, with the Leopards taking six of eight games in the series. The Hawks fell to 0-2 on the season, and will look to rebound at Penn on Friday.
“We have a relatively new group, and it’s going to take a little bit of time to build,” Monmouth head coach Robert McCourt said. “We have to be patient with the process. It’s a great group of kids, and I’m confident that we’ll get it going.”
Monmouth redshirt freshman Sean Murray made his second career start, adding another three saves.
Monmouth travels to Philadelphia to face Penn Friday at 8 p.m.
