HILLSIDE, N.J. — Redshirt sophomore Rene White and freshman Victor Gomez scored while junior Andrew Nino collected two assists in the NJIT men’s 2-1 victory over Navy at Kean University East Campus Facility Monday afternoon.
The Highlanders began their third consecutive season 2-0 while Navy fell to 0-2.
NJIT scored two goals in a five-minute span in the opening 16 minutes. Navy’s Nicko West was the lone goal-scorer.
Highlanders goalkeeper Victor Pujades recorded his second straight win, making three saves. Pujades made all three saves in the first half, two coming in a span of two minutes. The junior keeper produced a save in the 19th minute off the foot of Ben Nicholas and one minute later, Pujades made a diving stop at the back post.
White scored his second of the season in the 11th minute as he stole the ball and beat two Navy defenders.
The Highlanders doubled the lead on a goal in the 16th minute by Gomez, who cut behind the Navy defense on a cross inside the box by Nino. Gomez netted his first goal of the season.
Navy got on the board in the 20th minute on a goal by sophomore forward Nicko West. Jacob Williams started the scoring sequence, firing a hard shot inside the box on goal. West corralled the rebound and tucked away his first goal of the season past Pujades.
NJIT will make its first road trip of the season, visiting Rider University Friday at 7 p.m.
