HOUSTON — Sky Blue FC’s descent into National Women’s Soccer League hell continued in depressing fashion Saturday night.

The New Jersey club not only was trounced by the Houston Dash, 6-1, at BBVA Compass Stadium, it also tied the league record for most defeats in a season at 16.

Ironically, Sky Blue FC equaled the mark set by the Dash in 2014 when it finished 5-16-4. Sky Blue (0-16-5) hasn’t won a game this season and no NWSL side has ever finished a season winless. The team has three games remaining to avoid that dubious distinction.

The Dash enjoyed a 2-1 lead before striking for four goals over the final 25 minutes to turn the game into a rout.

Former St. John’s University standout Rachel Daly scored one goal and helped set up another.

Houston drew first blood in the 22nd minute. A ball was sent over the top for Daly as she entered the penalty area, playing her into a 1 v 1 situation with goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan. After Daly took a quick touch, Sheridan came off her post to make a diving stop, but the rebound landed directly at the feet of Linda Motlhalo just outside the 18. Mothalo one-timed the ball into the net.

In the 48th minute, the Dash lead was stretched to 2-0 after a thrown-in to Sofia Huerta, who had space on the right flank. She cut inside before sending a cross to the far post, where Veronica Latsko redirected a header into the back of the net.

Sky Blue FC pulled one back in the 54th minute after Shea Groom looked to cut a through-ball into the box for Katie Johnson, but a defender poked it before the feed arrived. As it fell to a defender, Imani Dorsey powered her way into possession before slotting a shot underneath goalkeeper Jane Campbell to make it 2-1.

Eleven minutes later, the roof caved in on the visitors.

In the 65th minute, Kealia Ohai made a run down the left flank before delivering a cross that was just a bit heavy and made its way to the right side of the box. As the ball bounced into that area, Huerta found herself well-positioned to strike a side volley that she tucked inside the far post for a 3-1 advantage.

Two minutes later, the lead was extended to three goals when Huerta was taken down in the box for a penalty kick opportunity. Daly who converted.

The tally soon became 5-1 in the 88th minute. Kyah Simon found Haley Hanson on a corner kick. Thembi Kgatlana finished the romp after she acquired the ball in the midfield from Hanson and made a long run with possession before slotting a shot into the goal.

Sky Blue FC will continue its four-game road trip against the Washington Spirit Saturday before returning home to Yurcak Field, hosting the Orlando Pride in its season finale on Saturday, Sept. 8 at noon.
