HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The Hofstra University women fell to Fairfield University, 1-0, in their home opener on Sunday afternoon at Hofstra Soccer Stadium Sunday afternoon.

Hofstra (1-1) outshot the Stags (2-0), 15-4, but Fairfield’s goal in the 53rd minute served as the difference. Hanley Courter capitalized on a defensive error and found the back of the net from just outside the 18-yard box.

The Pride turned up the heat in the second half, creating a flurry of chances, with Fairfield goalkeeper Aytana Muschjew tipping a Lucy Porterheader shot over the crossbar. A moment later, sophomore Sabrina Bryan played a ball through to senior Jenn Buoncore, who got in behind the backline, but Muschjew stripped Buoncore of the ball.

Nine of the Pride’s shots were on target.

The Pride will host Boston University at 7 p.m. Thursday.
