KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The St. John’s University women surrendered two late goals as it dropped a 2-0 decision to No. 25 University of Tennessee in the both team’s season opener Thursday night.

Amy Tompson scored for the Voluneteers in the 73rd minute before Mary Alice Vignola added an insurance goal.

Goalkeeper Jordan Kamp delivered a solid effort. turning aside three shots, including back-to-back saves in the opening half.

The Volunteers saw the game’s first several opportunities, firing off three corner kicks around the three-minute mark. The Red Storm defense held strong and kept the Vols without a shot on those tries.

Preseason All-Big EAst selection Christina Bellero recorded the first shot in the 14th minute, but her attempt was blocked. Less than seven minutes later, Zsani Kajan rocketed a shot that sailed wide.

Tennessee outshot St. John’s 7-2 in the first half.

The Red Storm recorded its first shot on goal in the 63rd minute when Kajan sent one to the net but it was denied by the Vols goalkeeper.

The Johnnies will play host to Buffalo in their home opener at Belson Stadium Monday at 7 p.m.
