QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John’s University men will travel to the Bronx for a Friday 7 p.m. contest against Fordham University, the first of three exhibitions in the next eight days for the Johnnies.
The Red Storm is 8-8-1 in its regular-season series with the Rams and has won five of its last seven meetings. Last season the Rams, who call Jack Coffey home, finished at 14-6-3 and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division I tournament.
The Johnnies will play their second exhibition Aug. 13 when the Johnnies travel to New Hampshire for a 1 p.m. match. It is the second consecutive season the Red Storm will square off with the Wildcats in the preseason, as last year St. John’s downed New Hampshire 3-1 at Belson Stadium. In 2017, New Hampshire also went deep in the NCAA Championship last season, advancing to the third round before falling to runner-up Indiana.
The Red Storm will return to Belson Stadium for its final match of the preseason against LIU Brooklyn Aug. 18 at 7 p.m. Last season St. John’s upended the Blackbirds, 1-0, in exhibition play using a 78th-minute goal from Matt Forster.
The Red Storm enters the fall campaign aiming to improve upon its third place Big East regular-season finish a season ago with a large influx of new faces in Queens. St. John’s will return unanimous Big East All-Freshman Team selection Jack Shearer. The sophomore forward played in all 19 matches last season and finished third on the team in points.
St. John’s will open the regular season at UC Santa Barbara Aug. 24 for 10:30 p.m. ET kickoff. The Gauchos finished last season at 6-8-5, falling in the Big West Tournament 1uarterfinals to UC Riverside.
