HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The Hofstra University women received all nine possible first-place votes and was the overwhelming favorite to repeat in the Colonial Athletic Association, it was announced Thursday.
Senior defender Madeline Anderson was named the preseason co-player of the Year and was joined on the preseason All-CAA team by sophomore midfielder Bella Richards.
The Pride received 81 points in the poll to beat out Northeastern, which got one first-place vote and 70 points. The voting was done by the league’s head coaches, who are not permitted to vote for their own team or student-athletes.
Anderson was the 2017 CAA defensive player of the year, along with earning United Soccer Coaches first team All-Region and All-CAA first team honors. She anchored a defense that posted 11 shutouts, while also adding two goals and two assists.
Richards played in all 21 games last season and earned All-CAA second team and CAA All-Rookie accolades during her freshman campaign. She tallied three goals and three assists, while making 14 starts in the midfield.
Hofstra compiled a 15-4-2 record in 2017 and an unblemished 9-0 CAA mark. After capturing the regular season conference title, the Pride won the CAA crown to advance to NCAA Division I Tournament.
Hofstra opens the season on Friday, August 17 when it travels to Bucknell for a 1 p.m. contest.
