QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John’s University women opened up their preseason schedule with a 3-1 victory over Wagner College at Belson Stadium Monday night.
Zsani Kajan tallied twice while recording a team-most seven shots, with four attempts on goal.
Goalkeepers Jordan Kamp, Vanessa Cole and Meredith Reinhardt each saw action for St. John’s turning aside three shots.
The Red Storm got on the board early when Kajan’s free kick found the back of the net from distance in the second minute.
Wagner responded in the eighth minute with a goal of its own to equalize at 1-1.
Following the first 30-minute period, the Johnnies regained the lead in the 54th minute when an Emily Purtell free kick from long range fell to Kayla Mesaros. The freshman fired a ball that sailed to the back of the net to give St. John’s a 2-1 lead.
The Red Storm made it a two-goal game in the 72nd minute when Kajan twirled around her defender in the box and rocketed a shot into the right corner off a slick feed from Samie Scaffidi.
The Johnnies will conclude exhibition play with a trip to Bethlehem, Pa. to take on Lehigh University Thursday at 7 p.m.
