Portland Thorns FC midfielder Lindsey Horan was voted the National Women’s Soccer League player of the month for July by the NWSL Media Association.
Horan, 24, scored three goals and added one assist in two appearances in July, leading Portland to a 3-0-0 record. She is tied for first in the Golden Boot race, finding the back of the net nine times. The Thorns FC (8-5-5) is riding a three-game winning streak and sit third in the league with 29 points.
It should be noted that Horan connected for the equalizing goal in the 90th minute in the U.S.’s 1-1 draw with Australia in the Tournament of Nations over the weekend.
The Golden, Colo. native began the month heading home a Tobin Heath free kick in the 32nd minute in Portland’s 4-0 home win over Utah Royals FC July 6. In the 62nd minute, she added an assist setting up a goal by Tyler Lussi, who scored after entering the match only 31 second earlier. (Watch highlights)
The U.S. international recorded her first brace of the season and the second of her Thorns FC career, leading the club to a 3-1 win over Houston Dash July 15. Horan opened the match with a header in the 16th minute off a cross from Emily Sonnett. She scored what would prove to be the game-winning goal in the 31st minute, tapping in a flicked-on ball by Ana-Maria Crnogorcevic off a free kick from Heath. (Watch Highlights)
Horan played 180 minutes and finished the month with five of seven shots on goal, six interceptions, seven clearances, 25 duels won and five chances created on 184 touches.
It is the first time Horan has been honored as the NWSL player of the month, joining Tobin Heath, Allie Long and Christine Sinclair (3). It also marked the sixth time a Thorns player has received the award, tied for the most in league history.
Portland will return to action against North Carolina Courage at Sahlen’s Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park Sunday at 6 p.m. ET.
The NWSL player of the month is selected each month of the regular season by the NWSL Media Association, a collection of writers that cover the league on a consistent basis. For more information on the NWSL Media Association, follow them on Twitter.
