NEW YORK – After opening up his mouth, Mike Petke has to open up his wallet and sit out not one, but two games.

Major League Soccer Wednesday issued the Real Salt Lake head coach a one-game suspension for on-field misconduct during his team’s match against Minnesota United FC Saturday.

This suspension is in addition to the one-game suspension as a result of being ejected from the game.

The former Red Bulls head coach and defender also has been issued a $10,000 fine by MLS commissioner Don Garber for the use of abusive and profane language directed at game officials and uncontrollable behavior when ordered and for public criticism of officials during a post-game press conference.

According to the league, this was the third disciplinary action against Petke, twice for public criticism of officials and once for improperly interacting with game officials.

Petke will serve his suspensions during Real Salt Lake’s matches against the Colorado Rapids Saturday and against the San Jose Earthquakes July 28.

Real Salt Lake also has been issued a $10,000 fine for social media posts from the club’s official Twitter handle that endorsed and amplified Petke’s comments.
