B.W. Gottschee, one of the most storied soccer clubs in the metropolitan area, has decided to move its men’s team from the Cosmopolitan Soccer League to the Long Island Soccer Football League for the 2018-19 season.

The club made its announcement via Twitter July 8.

“After much thought and discussion from the board members, coaches and players we will be moving over to @LISFLSoccer league and will be playing in Division 2 for the upcoming 2018-2019 season,” Gottschee said in a tweet.

The Gottschee youth system is indepedent of the men’s team and will continue to compete in the Cosmopolitan Junior Soccer League,  Gottschee Academy director Paul McGlynn said.

CSL responded to the men’s team switch on Twitter: “After 60 plus years this is extremely disappointing …”

Later Wednesday in another tweet, the CSL expanded on its earlier comment.

To be clear, what was dissappointing was the fact that they never cared to discuss with the league this decision,” it said on Twitter. “We would have liked very much to have this conversation. We were never given that courtesy and that is still very disappointing considering our history.”

Gottschee, which was established in 1951, is holding tryouts for its men’s team at Randall’s Island Field No. 91 Sunday at 5:30 p.m.
