CHICAGO – Chicago Red Stars forward Sam Kerr returned home to play Sky Blue FC Saturday and reminded her former team how much is was missing this season.
Not only did Kerr record a hat-trick in Chicago’s 3-1 win she became the first player in National Women’s Soccer League history to reach 50 career goals.
So, it should not be suprising that Kerr was named the player of the week Tuesday by the NWSL Media Association for Week 15 of the 2018 NWSL season.
The 24-year-old Kerr, 24, who was traded by Sky Blue FC to Chicago in the offseason, registered a three-goal performance to lead Chicago to a 3-1 win at Yurcak Field in Piscataway, N.J. She also became the first NWSL player to record three hat-tricks with the latest marking the 14th three-goal game in league history.
The Fremantle, Australia native scored her first goal in the 40th minute receiving a pass from forward Alyssa Mautz as the top of the box. Kerr collected the pass and fired a low shot into the lower left corner past goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan for the 1-0 lead. (Watch highlights)
The Australia international netted her second of the game as forward Yuki Nagasato played a ball over the top where she took the ball in stride and beat Sheridan for a 2-0 advantage. This strike made history as the 50th goal of her NWSL career.
In the 63rd minute, Kerr recorded her third goal of the night running onto a pass in behind the defense once again from Nagasato and firing a right-footed shot in the left corner to give her team a 3-0 lead.
Kerr played all 90 minutes and finished with 10 shots, six shots on goal and three chances created on 58 touches, according to Opta. She is the leading scorer in the NWSL with eight goals on the season.
It is the sixth time Kerr has been honored as the NWSL Player of the Week and the thirteenth time a member of Red Stars has won the award.
The Red Stars will return to action against Seattle Reign FC Saturday at 8 p.m. ET at Toyota Park in Bridgeview, Ill.
The NWSL player of the week is selected each week of the regular season by the NWSL Media Association, a collection of writers that cover the league on a consistent basis.
