Charlie Schiano, one of the founders of the original Rochester Lancers, was honored by the Monroe County Legislature Tuesday night.

Schiano received a Certificate of Recognition and Proclamation.

After the ceremony, Cheryl Dinolfo, the Monroe County executive, came up to Schiano and congratulated him, according to a witness.

Dinolfo’s late father-in-law, Pat Dinolfo, and Schiano were the major owners of the Lancers from 1967-1980. Dinolfo was president, Schiano the chairman of the board.

The Lancers were revived as an indoor soccer team by Sam Fantauzzo in 2011 and played in the Major Indoor Soccer League and then in the Major Arena Soccer League through 2015.

Two outdoor soccer teams named Lancers play today, the men in the National Premier Soccer League and the women, as the Lady Lancers, in United Women’s Soccer. Both teams called Marina Auto Stadium home this past season.

The field at the stadium has been named after Schiano when the Lancers play there.
