In a marathon game played at the Peter Collins Soccer Park in Plainview, N.Y. June 9, the Lake Grove/Newfield Tsunami edged the LaGrange Chazers, 4-3, in extratime to win the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association Girls Under-19 State Open Cup.

The Long Island Junior Soccer League team won the Barbara Rodriguez Cup, named for the Northport, N.Y. resident who was State Cup chairperson for 23 years (1992-2014).

Clare O’Connor, Carly Davis and Erin Peyton scored Lake Grove/Newfield’s goals during regulation. Caleigh Bennett connected for the game-winner on a 20-yard shot at the end of the second extratime period.

LaGrange, which plays in the East Hudson Youth Soccer League, did not return home to Duchess County empty-handed as it received the Rocco Amoroso Sportsmanship Award, as determined by the game officials. Amoroso, a U.S. Soccer Life Member who died in 2016, started the LIJSL Sportsmanship Program in 1980 and it spread to Eastern New York, nationally and to China and Ireland.

Lake Grove/Newfield will represent the ENYYSA at the Region I tournament in Spotsylvania, Va. June 29-July 3.
