The Dix Hills Hurricanes have pulled off a rarity as it won its fifth consecutive Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association State Open Cup championship.

In the Boys Under-19 final on June 9, the Long Island Junior Soccer League team defeated FC Somers Galaxy at the Peter Collins Soccer Park, 5-2.

FC Somers Galaxy play in the Westchester Youth Soccer District.

As it turns out, the Hurricanes won the Peter Collins Cup. Collins is a member of the U.S. Soccer Hall of Fame and U.S. Soccer Life Member who was LIJSL President from 1977 to 2004. The Bethpage resident coached the Hicksville Minutemen to the Boys-Under-19 national finals.

Sammy Steinberg scored two goals while Armand Kirbria, Andrew McDonald and Noel Reyes added one goal apiece for Dix Hills.

“We were sloppy at the start but settled down 15 minutes into the game,” Dix Hills coach Leo Musacchio said. “FC Somers was great competition and they pressed us hard in the beginning but our ball possession eventually made the difference.”

Dix Hills will represent Eastern New York at the Region I tournament in Spotsylvania, Va. from June 29-July 3.
